Review: Verizon 4G LTE MiFi – lightning in your pocket

Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 3:27 PM PST

IMG 9216 Review: Verizon 4G LTE MiFi lightning in your pocketNovatel has another mobile hotspot that supports 4G technology – the Verizon LTE MiFi. It’s much like the Sprint version we saw a few weeks ago with a few noticeable differences. For starters – and probably the most important thing here – it is much faster. The difference is really like night and day. If you’re looking for the fastest mobile hotspot on the market today, look no further than the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi. It has its drawbacks, but for the most part, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Hardware

The Verizon LTE MiFi looks almost exactly like its counterpart for Sprint in terms of form factor, shape, size and even weight. The Sprint version has a gunmetal bezel and a brushed face, whereas the Verizon MiFi has a chrome-colored bezel and a glossy, reflective face. It’s a bit of a fingerprint magnet and tends to get smudgy, but the thing is a workhorse — it’s meant to deliver fast 4G speeds, not sit there and look pretty. (Although sitting pretty couldn’t hurt; I found myself wiping it down occasionally.)

The face is emblazoned with the Verizon logo, and it’s clearly marked as a 4G LTE device. The power button sits just beneath an e-ink display, much like the one on the WiMax version. It shows signal strength, battery life and how many devices are connected to the mobile hotspot.

Unlike the WiMax version, however, the Verizon LTE MiFi does not support a microSD card for memory storage. It’s a small caveat, but this thing is primarily used for data connection, rather than data storage, anyway.

With the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi, you can connect up to 5 devices wirelessly at the same time. Thankfully, unlikely some broadband dongles, there is no software installation necessary for this device.

Speed and Battery Life

Now we’re getting to the meat of it. This thing is plenty fast, and in many cases, it performed a bit better than my home broadband connection – a paltry 15Mbps down and 0.75Mbps up courtesy of Time Warner Cable (whose 50/5Mbps plan will be hitting my home soon). With five speed tests performed in Manhattan and northern Brooklyn in New York City, the Verizon 4G LTE MiFi averaged 11Mbps down and 2.4Mbps up. It hit a peak of 17.2Mbps down in one instance, and the fastest upload I was able to get on it was 4.5Mbps. Definitely not too shabby when you realize you’re not tied down to your home Wi-Fi, or the coffee shop you’re in doesn’t have any Internet connectivity.

Now, that was all on 4G, mind you. 3G speeds, which is what this thing will default to when you’re not in an LTE area, were very sad. For some reason, I couldn’t get more than 0.75Mbps down and 0.2Mbps up. It was quite terrible, and when the indicator turned pink – letting me know that my device was currently feeding off of Verizon’s EV-DO network – my heart would sink. When the light indicator was blue, however, I was cruising along at peppy broadband speeds.

Battery life is rated for 5 hours of use, and the device will automatically shut off with a 30-minute timer (by default) to conserve life if not in use. In my experience, with full coverage and on a full charge, I was averaging about 3 hours of use before I needed to charge the MiFi. This was with some web browsing, e-mail, music streaming for about thirty minutes and a small handful of YouTube videos.

Value

Given the competition, the 4G LTE MiFi is actually a great deal at just $99.99 after mail-in-rebate with a two-year contract. For $50 a month, you get 5GB of data, which ought to get you through the month if you’re not using this thing as a home broadband replacement, something that I would not recommend. And it’s not just the competition’s pricing, either, that makes this a good value — it’s the speeds you’re getting when you’re in an LTE-covered area. If you’re in the market for a mobile hotspot, the only question you should be asking yourself is, “Do I live and/or work in an area covered by Verizon’s LTE network?” If not, you probably will be covered soon – Verizon is planning on a complete overlay of its CDMA network by the end of 2013, so be sure to check the carrier’s coverage map before buying this little guy. Otherwise, enjoy!

AT&T compatible HTC Wildfire S clears the FCC

htcwildfiresfcc AT&T compatible HTC Wildfire S clears the FCC

Good news for U.S. citizens looking to “enter the Android smartphone world” – the HTC Wildfire S has passed the FCC hurdle and is now pretty much ready to hit the market. It’s likely AT&T will get to carry this pretty impressive entry-level Android smartphone, considering that the version of the device FCC got to play with supports 3G on 850 and 1900MHz bands. In other words, those are the same frequency AT&T uses for operating its 3G network.

Unfortunately this is just a speculation at the moment, and we’re still waiting for either AT&T or HTC to say something about it. The way I see it, if priced correctly (let’s say $100) and paired with a “not that expensive” contract, AT&T should be able to move quite a few Wildfire S units — as I said it’s a perfect device for first-time smartphone buyers.

As a reminder, HTC’s baby comes with a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth 3.0, while Android 2.3 Gingerbread is running the show.

How To: Flash ClockworkMod custom Recovery on the T-Mobile G2X

Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 11:22 AM PST
IMAG00041 e1304121310516 How To: Flash ClockworkMod custom Recovery on the T Mobile G2X

So you have your T-Mobile G2X rooted, and you’re ready to try out the custom recovery for it. Well, there is more than one way to this, either from ROM Manager, or from a program made from one of the guys over at XDA-Developers. There are give and take for both of the methods, so we’re going to lay both of them out so you can decide which is the best method for you.

*The existing Clockwork recovery for the G2x can only mount the external memory (microSD card) at the moment, and this remains the same no matter what method you choose.

** If you somehow manage to kill your G2X in the process of flashing the recovery, you hold yourself responsible.

Method One (Difficulty: Easy)

Pros: Easy to install, no extra tools needed.

Cons: You must use ROM Manager to boot into recovery. (This doesn’t sound bad until you get yourself into a bootloop somehow and won’t be able to restore.)

1. Download ROM Manager from the Android Market (it doesn’t matter if you choose the free or premium version, but consider premium since it adds a good amount of features.)

2. Open Rom Manager and allow root access when Superuser prompts you.

3. Tap on Flash ClockworkMod Recovery, and select T-Mobile G2X.

4. Wait until the recovery is downloaded and flashed. (progress bar is at the top of the application.)

5. If you it says that the recovery was flashed successfully, tap on Reboot into Recovery to back up your current ROM. (This is the only way you can access ClockworkMod recovery with this method)

Easy enough, right?

Well, if you’d like to be able to access the recovery by a specific button combination from the phone, and don’t want to rely on an application, the method below is for you.

g2xrecoveryflasher e1304187215528 How To: Flash ClockworkMod custom Recovery on the T Mobile G2X

Method Two (Difficulty: Moderate)

Pros: Allows you to access ClockworkMod recovery without needing an application

Cons: More setup/steps, works on Windows only

The following method isn’t necessarily hard to do, but it does require more work than using ROM Manager. There are two steps to this method, installing the APX driver for Windows, and flashing the recovery.

1. Download the One-Click ClockworkMod Recovery NVFlasher here

2. Extract the file to a directory of your choice. You should see two folders in the directory you extracted the file in, APX, and NVFlash

3. Now we’re going to install the APX driver.

  • Remove the battery, and plug the USB cable into your computer.
  • Press and hold Volume Up and Down
  • While still holding the volume buttons down, plug the USB cable into your phone. Keep holding the keys down until Windows recognizes the new device and installs the driver “NVIDIA USB Boot recovery driver for mobile devices“.

4. Go to Device Manager in Windows, and under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, there should be an error icon next to the NVIDIA USB Boot recovery driver for mobile devices.

  • Right click the driver and select, “Update Driver software”
  • Select, “Browse my computer”
  • Select, “Let me pick”
  • Select, “Have Disk”
  • Browse to the APX folder that you extracted earlier
  • Press OK, accept any warnings, and install the driver
  • After refreshing Device Manager, the warning icon for the drive should no longer be there. If it is, uninstall the driver and repeat the steps.

5. Now onto flashing ClockworkMod Recovery:

  • Go to the folder you extracted earlier, go into NVFlash, and double-click on OneClickRecoveryFlasher.exe You’ll be presented with three options, but don’t click anything yet.
  • Unplug the USB from the phone, hold down Volume Up and Down and plug the USB back into your phone (do not let go of the volume keys yet.)
  • With the volume keys still being held down, click either “Flash ClockWorkMod Test2″ or “Flash ClockWorkMod 3.0.2.7″
  • A green command box will open, telling you whether the flash was successful or not. From my experience, I had to do this a few times before the recovery was successfully flashed. Just make sure you have the volume keys pressed down before you plug the USB back into the phone.
  • While the recovery is being flashed, the G2X’s screen will say “S/W Upgrade – Please wait while upgrading…
  • When the command box is done pushing the files (give it a minute or two), unplug the USB cable.
  • Put the battery back into the G2X. Reboot. Done!

To flash back to the stock recovery, follow the last 7 steps and click “Flash Stock”.

You’ve successfully flashed ClockworkMod recovery! To get into the recovery, boot the phone up by holding Power + Volume Down.

Whichever method you chose, you’re now ready to flash ROMs, and make Nandroid backups. Now, all we have to do is wait for these ROMs to appear.

parenting mobile Parenting Magazine launches new Android app, revamps existing iOS application

Zumobi and Bonnier’s Parenting Group launched the Parenting Ages & Stages application on the Android platform and the addition of new features to the iOS version of the app.

As you can imagine, Parenting Ages & Stages provides parents with targeted information on child development and parenting milestones. It initially debuted in Apple’s AppStore last June and has seen great success since, boasting a four-star rating from users and averaging more than 27 minutes of use per visitor.

The application is broken down into five categories — pregnancy, first year, second year, the early years and the school years — to allow users to quickly navigate through all of the content included. Users are also able to customize the experience with their children’s photos, names and ages and the app will deliver relevant news and advice based on a child’s age. Now this content is available to both Android and iOS users, alongside the added features of updated blog content and push notifications. The latter is especially interesting as it will alert users of product recalls so parents can keep their families as safe as possible…

SparkQuest raises $2.5 million to connect deal redemption with point-of-sale systems

Saturday, April 30th, 2011 at 3:50 AM PST

sparkquest home page phone SparkQuest raises $2.5 million to connect deal redemption with point of sale systemsAtlanta-based Sparkfly recently secured $2.5 million in institutional capital for its “mobile engagement platform” – SparkQuest. Using Sparkfly’s solution merchants and brands can offer personalized and ongoing promotions and experiences to customers beyond one-time deals.

SparkQuest works by connecting consumer deal redemption with merchant point-of-sale technology, addressing a key pain point for location-based marketers, which is the need to track real-time, individual consumer behavior and deal redemption data. As a result of using Sparkfly’s platform, businesses know who’s engaging in their promotions and redeeming which deals, when, where, how much and how often.

Moreover, the solution gives businesses the ability to engage consumers in interactive, game-like Quests, which merchants can connect with promotions, leveraging consumers’ social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

And right from the bat Sparkfly “sparked” interest in its solution, with the Atlanta market launch attracting more than 100 merchants in just six weeks, including large retailers and consumer goods companies…

app central Enterprise app store solution AppCentral goes multi platform

AppCentral, the enterprise app store we talked about in the past, launched what they say is the first multi-platform (iOS and Android) mobile application management solution made to help companies manage corporate apps on both company and employee-owned smartphones and tablets.

The problem with Android Market and Apple’s AppStore is that they are not envisioned to work in the corporate environment and can’t be used for managing corporate mobile apps inside the enterprise. That’s where AppCentral is looking for the business, delivering its solution as a SaaS (Software as a Service) or on-premise solution, using which companies can distribute, secure and manage corporate apps.

In other words, the AppCentral Mobile App Management (MAM) is made to address the three major challenges facing every enterprise hoping to harness the power of mobile apps: distribution, security and administration; so that IT departments can focus on the things they need to manage – corporate apps and data. While first-generation Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions were designed to manage corporate-owned devices, AppCentral’s solution was developed specifically for the new reality of employee-owned devices…

And you can get additional information from AppCentral’s website.

OpenFeint is going to China in partnership with the online game operator The9. Together the two companies launched The9 Game Zone, a mobile social gaming platform for Chinese gamers and a new distribution channel for mobile game developers looking to expand to ever growing Chinese market.

The9 Limited is one of the earliest providers of social networking services and online games in China and is thus “well equipped” to help game developers launch games in the world’s fastest growing economy.

The9 Game Zone offers SDK, using which developers are able to transform traditional stand-alone mobile games into interactive, social online games. Qualcomm’s augmented reality SDK now ready for the prime time

qualcomm ar sdk Qualcomms augmented reality SDK now ready for the prime time

It was back in February 2010 when Qualcomm first announced its augmented reality platform. Then in March they opened an augmented reality R&D center in Vienna, Austria; and finally in October, launched the first Android SDK in beta. Now that SDK is ready for the prime time and offered through the company’s online developer network, allowing interested companies and individuals to build, market and commercially distribute applications based on the Qualcomm AR platform.

The Qualcomm AR Android SDK supports native Android development with the Android tool chain, including the Android SDK and NDK. The Qualcomm AR Unity Extension supports rapid development with the Unity 3 game development tool, and there’s also a web application for creating and managing image resources.

Unsurprisingly Qualcomm also pitches its own products in the press release, saying that although applications built on the platform will run on all Android smartphones using Android 2.1 or greater, optimal performance will be exhibited on phones using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset. (What about NVidia’s Tegra 2?)

As a reminder, Qualcomm has recently co-operated with Big PlayAR and the Dallas Mavericks to introduce Mavs AR, which allowed fans attending the Mavs playoff games to point their smartphone running the application at their ticket to play a virtual basketball game.

Verizon updating HTC Thunderbolt on May 3

Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 5:41 PM PST

Screen shot 2011 04 29 at 8.37.53 PM Verizon updating HTC Thunderbolt on May 3

The HTC Thunderbolt for Verizon is one hot phone. It’s the fastest Android device you can grab today, running on Verizon’s blazing 4G LTE network, and its hardware components are as modern as they come. Perhaps the only downside, and it’s a huge one, is its poor battery life. Cross your fingers that coming updates will fix that, or at least give users the option to toggle between 3G and 4G when they need to.

On May 3, Verizon is releasing an update that will likely roll out to devices, but it seems you’ll be able to manually download it, too. It is build number 1.13.605.7 and baseband 1.16.00.0402w_1. The update page says that “Verizon Wireless and HTC encourage you to download this update.”

Here’s a list of the fixes and features:

  • Enhance data connectivity when accessing the Verizon 3G network
  • SMS and MMS messages are stored properly in the Messaging Application (Inbox, Sent, etc.)
  • Timing for device activation has been improved
  • “Backup Assistant” is correctly displayed in the Application menu.
  • Stability improvements for data centric applications such as Facebook, KAYAK, Yahoo! Mail, My Verizon and more.
  • Accurate location is displayed when accessing the Weather Widget.
  • Quickly load GPS updates for Google Maps and VZ Navigator.

We’re sure there are a number of other fixes and performance enhancements included, but we’ll have to wait and see what they are when the update does arrive. For more info, including how to update your device once the firmware is ready, see the link below.

Fring introduces group video calling for mobile devices

Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 5:22 PM PST

fring video mobile calling Fring introduces group video calling for mobile devicesPhone calls were a great way to keep in touch with friends from afar, and group or conference calling took it to a whole new level. Then video calling came around with apps like Fring, and it just raised the way we communicate another step. This time around, Fring is introducing a first for mobile video calling — group video calls.

Pocket-Lint reports:

Fring also lets you make free two-way video calls, voice calls and chat with friends, and is happy to work cross platform on Android and iPhone/iPod touch, as well as selected Nokia smartphones.

“Fring leap-frogs sluggish, expensive PC group video calling solutions by giving users the world’s first mobile Group Video service, free,” said Avi Shechter, co-founder and CEO of Fring.

“There is no reason why users need to run home to their PC in order to have a ‘spontaneous’ video call with their friends and family. Users love seeing all their friends at the same time, on one screen, but want to be able to do it, when and where they want.

It’s cool to have group video calling now that nearly every new smartphone is being equipped with front-facing cameras for video calls. The more, the merrier – right?

The app is available in the Android Market and the iTunes App Store and it’s totally free. To see more of the app in action with the new features, check out the video below.

While NVIDIA is getting a lot of good press for the powerhouse that is the Tegra 2 chip inside devices like the T-Mobile G2x (read full review), Qualcomm wants you to know that its Snapdragon processor has plenty of power, too.

In the video below, Qualcomm touts the Snapdragon and its ability to play back HD video. One of the cool things is that it can play 720p HD video in HTML5. Many times in Android, when you click on those videos, it’ll just kick you out to the media player.

It’s not just with HTML5 though, as Qualcomm Snapdragon has been working with Adobe to provide some high-quality Flash playback. There’s a portion in the video comparing the Flash HD video on a Qualcomm device versus a competing product and it’s not even close.

Sure, the company’s obviously not going to be putting out videos which makes its products look bad but this is an impressive display of what Qualcomm Snapdragon can do. We can’t wait to get our hands on the dual-core version on devices like the EVO 3D.

P1018020 660x495 AT&T releases HSUPA update for the Inspire 4G, Atrix 4G coming soon

AT&T is preparing a series of updates for the Atrix 4G and the Inspire 4G. The two updates include several bug fixes and stability improvements, most notable is he unleashing of HSUPA speeds on the Android handsets. Confirmation of this HSUPA upgrade comes straight from AT&T which released the following information on its website:

Today, AT&T began to deploy an update for the HTC Inspireâ„¢ 4G that provides, among other features, the addition of enhanced uplink speed technology. (HSUPA).

An update that adds HSUPA for the Motorola ATRIX 4G has cleared testing and will be deployed soon.

Both updates will roll out to customers of both phones over the coming weeks. Users will get a message on their device notifying them of an update and to connect to Wi-Fi to download it. After downloading it, the user needs to only allow the update to automatically install.

This update is a blessing for Atrix 4G and Inspire 4G owners who purchased their device with the promise of 4G speeds and were surprised to discover their data speeds were capped by AT&T. Android faithful that stuck with the handset are now rewarded with their patience. Look for the update to land on the Inspire 4G in the coming weeks and on the Atrix 4 shortly afterwards. For more details, check out the change log on the next page.

Hands-On: HBO Go for Android

Hands-On: HBO Go for Android

Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 4:00 PM PST
2011 04 29 15.29.40 e1304116323260 Hands On: HBO Go for Android

We were expecting to see HBO Go launch in early May, but it’s been greenlit a bit early and you can grab the app today and catch up on Game of Thrones from you iPhone, iPad, or Android phone. So how does the new app perform? Read on to find out.

Upon first launch, you’ll be asked to choose your cable provider to validate that you’re a HBO subscriber. In this case, I was using Comcast/Xfinity. In order to successfully log in, you have to use the Comcast-provided email that you were given when you first activated the service. You can log into your account with your e-mail address you use to pay bills online but since that is not the primary email address for the account, you may get stuck.

HBO Go offers up a large selection of videos to watch, and you can view them over WiFi or over your network’s data service. The idea is great, but it’s not as easy to get up and running as it should be. One issue that I encountered was that after logging in, a notification pops up saying, “This network is restricted by Parental Control settings.”  After spending half an hour with customer service, the notification ceased and I was good to go.

After signing in successfully, another small issue began to happen. Every time I watched a video, a rotating circle to signify that the video was buffering was always in the middle. Even when a video was playing back fine, the circle remained. The trick to solve most problems with HBO Go seems to be uninstalling and reinstalling the application. This solved the buffering circle for video playback for me and has fixed the Parental Controls notification for others.

Even at its best, Go still needs a lot of work. We’d like to see some filtering options for genre, series, movies, etc., but it could be a while before we see any features like this to be implemented. HBO Go is a much better experience on the computer, but it takes the “Go” out of the service.

Issues aside, HBO Go is obviously very new and development team behind the app has some work cut out for them for the experience to become as solid as they may have envisioned it to be. Should this stop you from trying out HBO? Well, it depends on how much you want to watch the premium channel on your phone or computer. We’d actually be surprised if we didn’t see an update to the application to fix bugs, but then again, the few bad experiences we’ve heard so far may be unique. Let’s hope so.

If you want to give it ago, you can grab HBO in the Android Market, and Apple’s App Store right now.

Apparently the official BlackBerry website briefly showed the Bold Touch, which said it was coming soon, would be running OS 7, and has a new “Liquid Graphics” touchscreen, whatever that means. Also, the PlayBook in the background is featuring the official Facebook app that we had seen Adobe teasing last week; hopefully we’ll see that at BlackBerry World too.

Based on spec sheets from previous leaks, the Bold Touch 9900 (code-named Montana or Dakota) is expected to have a 1.2 GHz processor, 768 MB of RAM, a 2.8-inch 640 x 480 touchscreen, 8 GB of local storage, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, and the usual fare like Wi-Fi, GPS, and 3G. New additions will include mobile hotspot, NFC, and augmented reality apps thanks to a new magnetic compass (see some screenshots of the native app here).

The Bold Touch looks like it will appeal to RIM’s core buttoned-down audience, but the real fun stuff, like the Monaco/Monza/Touch may very well not show up next week. Even with one phone, some new PlayBook developer stuff, and lots of apps to check out, I’m sure BlackBerry World will be a solid show, though it would be a lot more exciting if RIM went to town and unloaded a bunch of phones at once.

HP Veer white HP Veer Spotted in White with AT&T Branding

We’ve seen trucks driving around promoting HP’s next webOS smartphone, we’ve seen the diminutive Veer pass through the FCC, and now some crisp press shots have surfaced, clearly marked for a spot on AT&T’s shelves. As you can see, the Veer is sporting a white paint job that has yet to be seen until now; personally, I prefer the classic black, but apparently white phones are a pretty big deal.

The HP Veer will be the smallest in a trio of new webOS devices launched over the next couple of months, all of which were announced at Mobile World Congress. Despite its size, it includes some respectable specifications, like an 800 MHz processor, 2.6-inch 320 x 400 display, 512 MB of RAM, HSPA+ support, Wi-Fi b/g with mobile hotspot, and GPS. Needless to say, I’m sure we’ll be seeing this on one of the lower rungs of AT&T’s pricing tiers, but that gives the HP Pre 3 some room to reach for the upper end where it belongs. We’re not quite sure if the Veer will launch with webOS 2.1, or something more advanced like 2.3, or even 3.0, but my fingers are crossed for some substantial new features one way or the other.

A launch may be as soon as May 2nd., and given all of these signs, it wouldn’t be surprising. We’ll keep our eyes peeled!

Motorola Droid 3 spotted again with 4 inch display and front-facing camera

droid 3 e1304109006202 Motorola Droid 3 spotted again with 4 inch display and front facing cameraThis may not be the first time we’ve caught a glimpse of the Motorola Droid 3, but it’s certainly one of the best photos we’ve seen so far of the handset’s face. While the Droid 2 wasn’t much of an upgrade from the original, the next generation of the Droid family will be kicking it a notch, bringing a far superior feature set to the table.

You’ll immediately notice that the Droid 3 will be sporting a larger display than its predecessors, and we’re glad to see it at the 4-inch mark. A display of this size is definitely the sweet spot for smartphones, as it’s not too small or too large. We wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be a qHD display, as newer Motorola handsets are beginning to ship with them, and it’s definitely a welcomed addition.

Accompanying the larger screen is a front-facing camera for video-chatting, which is something that’s been left out of all previous Motorola handsets on Verizon. While it’s still not a necessity for many people, the addition of a front-facing camera isn’t a bad thing to have. And, with Android 2.3.4 enabling a native video chat client through Google Talk, it’s yet another feature that will become more useful when the handset receives the update.

We’re still not sure if the Droid 3 will have support for Verizon’s 4G/LTE, but it’s entirely possible. That said, Verizon’s LTE portfolio is filling up rather quickly, and the D3 could join the ranks of the Incredible 2, and Droid X^2, which we don’t see as a problem.

We’re finally seeing the update that we wished for in the Droid 2, but it looks like the wait will be worth it. The only thing we have to wait for now, other than the full spec sheet, is to see if the handset will be running Motoblur. Sadly, it probably will, but if the handset ships with an unlockable bootloader, all may be forgiven, and we could see some Motoblur-free custom ROMs.

We like the Droid 3 more and more every time we see it. What about you?
