Apple iPhone OTA Updates Apple and Verizon planning iOS over the air updates later this year?

Most folks find it annoying to have to be at a computer when updating their iPhone, iPod touch or iPad devices because of the need for iTunes. While it has been great for Apple, and prevents the need of having to roll out updates in batches due to size and other restrictions, some folks just don’t like it. We want our over-the-air updates just like Android!

Word is that Apple and Verizon are in talks to get OTA updates out for iOS devices by the end of the year. According to 9to5Mac:

Apple and Verizon Wireless are said to have been in talks over these wireless software updates since early this year. Sources could not comment on whether or not Apple is negotiating similar deals with AT&T or international iPhone carriers.

It doesn’t make too much sense for sources to be left in the dark regarding AT&T and other GSM carriers, but I guess that’s just the way it goes. The idea is that a user would get a push notification notifying them of the update, and gives the option to accept or reject the update at the time. After all, you could be in the middle of a phone call or a game when it arrives, and it’s not like you’ll have the convenience of updating it at the computer when you want to. I mean, having 10 minutes out of your day set aside, maybe at night before you go to bed, to update your phone is just way too easy, right?

While it’d be pretty damn cool to have iOS updates sent over the air, I really could care less. I’m at a computer often enough that I can update my phone at my convenience, and I’m not the type who absolutely has to update the minute it’s sent out. But that’s just me.
