Jealous that the Netflix application for Android only works on a handful oh phones at the moment? Well, we don’t have a way to get it up and running on every handset, but we can add at least one more handset to the portfolio of supported devices. By tricking the Netflix application to think that the G2X is actually a G2, you can get streaming video up and running rather easily.

Your G2X needs to be rooted before you continue, and you’ll also need to have a file manager that will allow you to edit system files (we suggest Root Explorer). Netflix streaming is achieved by editing the handset’s build.prop file, which is essentially the identity of the phone. We’d suggest you back up the existing build.prop file before you edit it, as you may want to go back. Some applications may be broken by doing this, like Swype, but reinstalling the application is said to fix the problem. Other issues could linger, but as long as you have the original file backed up, you should be good to go.

While this likely won’t hurt your phone, you take all responsibility for any damages.

*While editing the build.prop saves the original after you make changes, you may want to back it up manually just to be safe. It’s as easy as long-pressing the build.prop file, copy it, and past it somewhere on your SD card.

**This was tested on the CyanogenMod 7 Nightly build, and it may not work for all ROMs, so keep that in mind.

1.) Download the Root Explorer application or equivalent. (Root Explorer is a paid app, but it’s one of the best, so it may be worth it to you)

2.) Open Root Explorer and go into the System folder

5.) Change the following lines that have the red dots next to them to look like the HTC build.prop

(the last two lines are actually one long line, so make sure you don’t split them up.)

Here are the changes in text format:

ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision

ro.product.manufacturer=HTC

ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys

6.) Hit menu, and Save & Exit. You should be told that the original build.prop was saved as build.prop.bak.

7.) Reboot the phone.

8.) Download and install the Netflix application, log in, and you should be good to go.

Now it’s time to get your stream on.
